Gallagher Fluid Seals represents a number of expansion joint manufacturers, enabling us to provide an expansion joint for any piping system in any industry.  The ABRA-LINE™ Rubber Expansion Joints from Garlock are meant for highly-abrasive applications.

Expansion Joint: Style 4394The Garlock ABRA-LINE™ Style 4394 Rubber Expansion Joint is a multi-convoluted, lightweight expansion joint, designed for lower pressure applications that require significant amounts of movement, axially and/or laterally. Its low spring rates make it ideal for load cell, bin activator, vibrating bin, silo, and shaker boot applications.  The below success story comes directly from Garlock and an application using the ABRA-LINE™ Style 4394 joints.

INDUSTRY

Chemical Processing - Abrasive application

CUSTOMER
The customer is a leading wholesale supplier of acetylene— the most efficient fuel gas for welding and cutting applications. Through additional products and services, they provide customers with a turnkey solution for receiving acetylene and maintaining their cylinder fleets.

BACKGROUND
Expansion Joint: Style 4394This chemical processing plant produces acetylene. The acetylene production process involves calcium carbide that is fed through a screw feed to metering bins. Style 4394 ABRA-LINE™ Expansion Joints, along with stainless steel flow liners, are installed at the bottom of the metering bins. During the manufacturing process after passing through the metering bins, calcium carbide is mixed with water, causing a chemical reaction, which produces the acetylene.

PROPOSITION VALUE
Garlock Expansion Joints offer superior performance, reliability and service life. This results in an improvement in plant safety, an increase in the mechanical integrity of equipment and allows customers to gain a competitive advantage in the market place.

OPERATING CONDITIONS
1. Size: 10” x 6” 4394 ABRA-LINE™ Expansion Joints with stainless steel flow liner
2. Temperature: Ambient
Expansion Joint: Style 43943. Application: Screw feed metering bin
4. Media: calcium carbide
5. Pressure: up to 15 PSI

SOLUTION AND BENEFITS
There are now 12 ABRA-LINE™ expansion joints installed in the plant which have outlasted the previous solution which would only last 6 months in this application. The customer is hoping to get years of service out of them due to the abrasion resistance of ABRA-LINE™ and the use of a flow liner.
