Gore® GFO® Fiber vs Graphite/PTFE Packing

When tested alongside generic graphite/PTFE packing, packing made of 100% Gore® GFO® Fiber achieves better results for all key attributes: creep resistance, retention of lubricant, sealability, and stability (shrinkage).

The differences in performances for each generic packings will have an impact on the operational costs.

Based on calculations for a 100 psi (6.9 bar) pump, 2 inch saft (50 mm); Drip rate 25,000 gallons (94.6 m3)/ year; Packing = $40; Replacement of packing = 3 times per year; kWh = $0.12

According to the company website, Gore GFO provides a number of advantages over generic graphite PTFE packings, including:

  • Up to 7 times more creep resistance
  • Retains up to 15 times more lubricant
  • Up to 11 times greater sealability
  • Up to 15 times more stable

While they may all look the same, it is worth noting that there are huge inconsistencies in the actual product quality and performance of many of the packing solutions offered.

"The installation of these products can increase operating costs (power, water, maintenance) and risk of premature failure as well as unscheduled shutdowns. Such problems can cost a lot of time and money," GORE says on its website.

In order to help its customers avoid these pitfalls, Gore set up its Seal of Assurance Program. Working with a worldwide group of authorized braiders, the program ensures that each fiber used in braiding the packing is GORE GFO.

Look for the "100% GFO" seal on the box and the packing. GORE GFO is the only packing that is identified this way.
