What is a Spring Energized PTFE Seal?

Spring energized PTFE seals perform reliably in a variety of applications where conventional elastomeric seals fail due to chemical attack, extreme heat or cold, friction, extrusion or compression set.

PTFE seals have three basic design elements:

  • A pressure-actuated U-shaped jacket
  • A metal spring loading device
  • High performance polymeric seal materials

So what is a spring energized PTFE seal? It’s a spring-energized U-cup that uses a variety of jacket profiles, spring types and materials in rod and piston, face and rotary seal configurations. They are used when elastomeric seals fail to meet temperature range, chemical resistance or friction requirements.

Jacket profiles are made from PTFE and other high performance polymers. Spring types are available in corrosion-resistant alloys, including stainless steel, Elgiloy and Hastelloy.

Kalrez® 7745 Replaces 1045

Kalrez KLX-16001DuPont™ Kalrez® 1045 parts were phased out of the Kalrez product line at the end of March 2016. Kalrez 1045 parts have a long history of use in dinitrogen tetroxide (nitrogen tetroxide) service.

This chemical is often used as the oxidizer in rocket propellant, when combined with a hydrazine based rocket fuel. Nitrogen tetroxide is a very strong oxidizer, and Kalrez 1045 is resistant to oxidizing liquids; it has been the product of choice for hypergolic propellant applications.

How Parker Sure Torque Gaskets Help Railroads

Rail Yard New regulations are making it tougher to haul goods by railroad. Haulers are spending $2.9 billion to upgrade tank cars, and the use of railroads to transport crude oil declined by 17 percent last year. And starting this year, shippers and terminals will be held responsible for NARs, or non-accident releases.

Our partners at Parker – a long-time Gallagher O-ring supplier – discuss this trend in a recent blog post.

As of last year, NARs has gone up by nearly 20 percent. In most cases, these incidents involved problems with the manway. The four main issues were loose bolts, missing gaskets, misaligned gaskets and deteriorated gaskets.

Parker O-Ring Handbook Goes Digital

Parker O-ring handbook, o-ring ehandbookFor more than 50 years, the Parker O-Ring Handbook has been an engineering staple of the sealing industry.

Now, it’s gone digital.

In 2015, Parker Hannifin Corporation launched an interactive digital reference guide to enhance and broaden the customer reach of the existing Parker O-Ring Handbook, the Parker O-Ring eHandbook.

“I’m constantly amazed and honored at how often I run across it in unexpected places,” says Dan Ewing, senior chemical engineer and materials manager at Parker’s O-Ring division, “I’ve come to expect to see a well-used copy sitting on a customer’s desk, but I’m pleasantly surprised when I find it cited in academic papers, referenced in reports written by government agencies and discussed in industry association meetings.”

Prototyping and Testing Sealing Solutions

testing sealing solutionsAt Gallagher Fluid Seals, engineering is central to every project and solution we deliver.  Our goal is to provide sealing solutions where there had been sealing failures, and our engineering team is among the most experienced and talented in the industry.

This is the third in a four-part series discussing how we work with our customers to create a sealing solution for their most critical applications.  So far, we’ve talked about Application Discovery & Review and Commercial Evaluation & Development.  The third step in this process is Prototyping & Testing.

Depending on the nature of the part, the first run of prototype parts will be developed for evaluation and testing purposes using a single or low cavity tool.  With advances in on-demand manufacturing technology, some seal manufacturers now offer rapid prototyping or “express” services, where prototypes can be machined or 3D printed to exacting specifications.  This lowers mold and tooling cost while usually providing a faster turnaround time.

No Leakage in 10 Years with Kalrez Perfluoroelastomer Seals

Kalrez Perfluoroelastomer SealsDramatic increases in instrument performance and reliability have been achieved where original PTFE gasket seals have been replaced with Kalrez® custom gaskets from the DuPont™ Performance Polymers range of products.

A Finnish manufacturer of process refractometers was utilizing process media at temperatures ranging from -20° to +220°C and pressures from 0.7 bar to 25 bar. These aggressive operating conditions resulted with the PTFE seals needing to be regularly replaced on a 6-12 months operating cycle.

However, after the seals were replaced by Kalrez® custom gaskets, there was no experience of fluid leakage over a 10 year period, even though the sealing products were subject to permanent in-line fluids immersion during this period.
