Natural rubber has been used for millennia.  It wasn't until an increased demand for rubber in the 1890s, due to an expanded use of bicycles (and their pneumatic tires), led to the successful polymerization of Isoprene, the first synthetic rubber.

After the cost of natural rubber became prohibitive, and World War II further accelerated the need for synthetic alternatives, many different compounds were created.  As additional refinements and improvements were made to the synthesizing process, the quantity of synthetic rubber produced exceeded that of natural rubber by the early 1960s.

Today, modern, high-performance elastomers are continually expanding the limits of what can be sealed effectively.  Contact the Gallagher Engineering Department if you need to know what material would be best for your specific application.
