Compressed non-asbestos gasket materials are subject to a natural aging process, like all elastomer-containing materials. This process depends on the kind of elastomer, its vulcanization system, and the storage conditions. Unfavorable storage conditions such as extreme temperatures, exposure to sunlight, low humidity, etc. can lead to a premature reduction of the material’s quality.

Below outlines the conditions for proper storage. These should be followed in order to achieve an optimum shelf life of 5 years:

  • Temperature: <77°F (25°C)
  • Relative humidity between 50-60%
  • No exposure to direct sunlight or other intensive light source
  • No contact with metals
  • Store horizontally (flat) on a shelf/rack

The ability of a gasket to make and maintain a seal depends not only on the style and quality of the gasket material, but also on medium being sealed, the flange design, the amount of pressure applied to the gasket by the bolts, and how the gasket is assembled onto the flanges and tightened. These factors are beyond the manufacturer’s control.
