FKM vs. FFKM Seals: Understanding the Differences and Choosing the Right Material

FKM vs. FFKM Seals: Understanding the Differences and Choosing the Right Material

Selecting the right sealing material is one of the most important decisions when designing or maintaining equipment that operates in demanding environments. Temperature, chemical exposure, pressure, and cost all influence which elastomer will deliver the best long-term performance.

Two materials frequently compared are FKM (Fluoroelastomer) and FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer). While both offer excellent resistance to heat and aggressive chemicals, they are engineered for different levels of performance and come with significantly different costs.

Understanding where each material excels can help prevent premature seal failure while avoiding unnecessary material expense.

What Is FKM?

FKM is a family of fluorocarbon elastomers known for outstanding resistance to fuels, petroleum oils, hydraulic fluids, and many industrial chemicals. Commonly recognized by trade names such as Viton®, FKM has become a standard sealing material across a wide range of industries because it balances durability, chemical resistance, and affordability.

Typical benefits of FKM include:

  • Excellent compatibility with fuels, lubricants, and hydraulic fluids
  • Continuous operating temperatures up to approximately 400°F (204°C)
  • Good resistance to compression set
  • Strong mechanical properties and wear resistance
  • More economical than premium perfluoroelastomer materials

Because of its versatility, FKM is commonly specified for automotive systems, aerospace components, industrial equipment, pumps, valves, and fluid handling applications.

What Is FFKM?

FFKM, or perfluoroelastomer, commonly known by its trade name Kalrez® is designed for applications where conventional elastomers reach their performance limits. Its highly fluorinated molecular structure provides exceptional resistance to aggressive chemicals while maintaining the flexibility needed for reliable sealing.

FFKM is often selected when equipment operates in environments where seal failure is not an option.

Key advantages include:

  • Continuous service temperatures up to approximately 600°F (316°C)
  • Outstanding resistance to nearly all industrial chemicals
  • Excellent performance in highly corrosive process environments
  • Low compression set for extended service life
  • Ideal for high-purity manufacturing processes

Although FFKM offers industry-leading performance, it is also one of the most expensive elastomer materials available. In many applications, its capabilities exceed what is actually required.

Performance vs. Cost

One of the biggest considerations when comparing FKM and FFKM is determining whether the additional performance is truly necessary.

While FFKM offers superior chemical compatibility and higher temperature capability, many systems never encounter conditions that require those advantages. Specifying FFKM where FKM would perform equally well can substantially increase sealing costs without improving overall system performance.

Selecting the right material requires evaluating the complete operating environment, including:

  • Process temperature
  • Chemical exposure
  • Pressure
  • Required service life
  • Maintenance intervals
  • Budget constraints

A careful review of these factors helps ensure the seal material matches the application's actual requirements rather than simply choosing the highest-performance option.
