Reducing Maintenance and
Eliminating Pollution Risk from Aging Equipment

Topics will include:

Eliminating Greased Babbitt from a “Diaphragm” or “Seal Bearing” using Water and Thordon materials
  • Eliminated greasing & pollution risk by re‐designing original bearing to use water lubrication
  • 1st example – 4.1MW vertical Francis turbine, built in 1924
  • 2nd example – vertical propeller turbine, built in early 1900’s
Carbon to SXL – Radial Segmented Seal Refurbishment
  • 6x 93MW Francis units, built in 1965 originally with carbon graphite radial seal segments
  • Reduced leakage, extended seal face life, and simplified assembly & installation with Thordon SXL
  • Saved money by re‐working existing large diameter seal housing castings instead of replacing
Oil to Water ‐ Kaplan Turbine Guide Bearing Conversion
  • 15MW vertical Kaplan unit, built in 1956 originally with oil lubricated Babbitt bearing
  • Replaced oil lubricated turbine guide bearing with water lubrication using Thordon SXL
  • Tapered keyset design allows bearing inspection or replacement in <1day
Upgrading Linkage Bearings on a Pump Turbine
  • 3x 365MW pump turbine units, built in 1995
  • Replaced SKF self‐lubricated spherical bearings with unique Thordon design to extend bearing life
  • Uses ThorPlas thermoplastic material to reduce impact loading due to gate vibration
Grease Free, Zero Maintenance Gate Hoist Bearings
  • Original greased roller bearings on tainter gate chain hoist replaced with Thordon SXL
  • Split pillow block design allows easy replacement of bearing inserts
  • No maintenance or automatic greasing systems required, zero risk of grease pollution into river
