CUSTOMER PROFILE AND BACKGROUND
The refinery was experiencing leakage rates of over 500ppm with their current valve setup. This resulted in a high potential for emissions compliance violations. The customer was unsure if their valves could maintain leakage below the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) maximum 100ppm of fugitive emissions in the atmosphere.
CHALLENGES FACED
The refinery needed a trusted low-emission valve packing solution to maintain compliance with regulations set by the EPA on more than 80 valves within their plant.
SOLUTION AND BENEFITS
Garlock’s application engineers suggested the installation of 9000-EVSP LE packing sets to solve the problem. As a result, the leakage rate was reduced by 90% on all the valves that were repacked. The low emission packing continued to display EPA compliant leak rates for these valves after more than two years of service, well below the 100ppm expectation from the plant and the EPA.
