Failure is not an option in the most demanding sealing applications. Valves continually strain the capabilities of sealing solutions, and elastomer solutions are often not enough. The unparalleled reliability of high-performance metallic seals from our partners at Technetics can help excel in the face of these challenging scenarios.
In these extreme environments, high-performance metallic seals combine state-of-the-art engineering with advanced materials design to deliver a product that exceeds expectations and stands up to the rigors of these applications.
Why Use High-Performance Metallic Seals?
Traditional sealing methods, such as elastomers or graphite seals, present limitations when extreme environments come into play. Under the tremendous workload of valves in these applications, they can lose tightness or deform, presenting distinct challenges.

THE ORION ENGINEERED SEALS BEARING PROTECTION DEVICE (BPD)
The Orion Engineered Seals patented Bearing Protection Device (BPD) represents state of the art bearing protection technology which provides maximum protection against contaminants while maintaining lubrication in the bearing. It is the premier non-contacting bearing protection device on the market today.
The BPD was designed with an understanding of the nature of the bearing housing environment under all operating conditions and utilizes the laws of physics to create what has proven to be the best performing and most cost effective way to protect the bearings of your rotating equipment.
But how does it work?

A large beverage producer turned to Vesconite Bearings for a solution when it found that its forklift side-shift pads were not able to cope with the typical 2-t beverage loads that its single double-pallet-handler forklifts carried.
Side-shift pads are located between the forklift attachment and the carriage of the forklift, and allow the user to shift a load for quick and accurate placement by a stationary forklift onto a goods truck.
However, in the case of the beverage company, the originally-installed pads were quickly bitten into by the forklift attachment when moving the heavy beverage-containing pallets.
“The original nylon pads lasted about two weeks until they started being bitten in to, and then we had to use silicon spray,” says the company’s forklift technician.
Since forklifts are an integral part of the company’s business, which relies on efficient materials handling and logistics to supply large volumes of beverages, an intervention was needed.

KLINGER® Graphite Laminate PSM
The pure graphite gasket material with a stainless steel tang insert
KLINGER® Graphite Laminate PSM has a 0.1 mm thick perforated stainless steel insert. The insert aids material handling properties and also increases the blow-out resistance. The insert is mechanically bonded to pure exfoliated graphite and therefore does not rely on adhesive.
Stable physical properties over the whole temperature range. KLINGER® Graphite Laminates PSM is suitable for hot water and steam at high temperatures up to 842°F (450°C).
In order to prevent the gasket material from sticking to the flange surface (even at high temperatures), the graphite surface can be given a non-stick coating at the customer's request. With this process, the gasket material's surface is coated and not impregnated.

If you have an application with a rotating shaft, you likely need a seal. Rotary shaft seals often take the form of what is commonly known as an “oil seal.” These usually consist of an elastomeric sealing lip, with a molded-in-metal case to facilitate a press-fit into the hardware.
Oil seals are typically mass-produced, and are usually available from stock in a variety of sizes. They function best in oil-lubricated environments, such as engine crankcases or gearboxes. But in dry running applications, you may need a PTFE-based sealing element.
In addition to not needing lubrication, PTFE lip seals provide a number of advantages over elastomeric oil seals. PTFE’s ability to handle much higher temperatures means higher rotational speeds can be achieved.
High-wear fillers can be added for much longer service intervals when compared to elastomers. Friction characteristics will also be far superior therefore lowering torque requirements.

Fluids play a critical role in sustaining life. Keeping animals and humans hydrated and helping plants grow are obvious ways. Less obvious ways include moving cargo around the world and keeping equipment operating (hydraulic oils, coolants, engine oils, etc.). All these applications require seals of some sort ranging from public water systems to hydraulic pumps. What happens when these fluids become aggressive? People typically think of acids as being an aggressive media, but for many fluoroelastomers, bases are more aggressive presenting severe challenges.
Using material science and technology, Parker has created a new class of Base Resistant (fluoro) Elastomer (BRE) compounds.

Kalrez® TriLobe™ Seals
DuPont has developed a unique seal design to improve seal life in dovetail grooves. This design benefits from the excellent chemical, thermal and plasma resistance of DuPont™ Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer parts with a unique cross-sectional trilobe seal that eliminates many of the problems associated with semi-dynamic seal applications using a dovetail groove. These problems include installation difficulties as well as short seal life and particle generation due to seal wear and degradation.

Using GORE® Low Friction Film, a tissue-thin coating material made from graphite-filled expanded PTFE (ePTFE), enables a new level of performance in dynamic elastomer seals: Lower friction. Longer life. Better tightness.
GORE Low Friction Film – an innovative, tissue-thin coating material for dynamic elastomer seals – creates a permanent mechanical connection with the elastomer during the molding process.
Made from graphite-filled ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene), this new solution opens up new opportunities and potentials in design, performance and application of dynamic seals. In automotive applications, it reduces friction and improves wear-resistance while maintaining excellent elasticity and sealability. Quite simply, this material is made for designing the future of mobility.
